Life may not be a bed of roses

 June 11, 2022

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade, and when your life isn't a bed of roses, give lavender a try! I know that may not be a universal truth, but a stroll through a lavender farm may be just what you need. This tableau is inspired by my recent trip to Fairlamb Lavender Farm in Sandy Lake, PA for a 4 corner bag painting class. I often GET to do these fun activities with my mom and aunt, and today was no different. My aunt found this fun class, so we of course jumped on board!

As expected, there isn't any trash on this farm (it is a business after all), so this tableau is all about the treasure (the atmosphere, the company, and of course, the project). We did make quite a bit of mess with our painting class, but that is to be expected. Before the class, I had an opportunity to walk around this quaint farm. We were greeted by this cute little guy (who actually wanted to go for a ride with my dad when he jumped in his car), which only added to the homey atmosphere of this family owned farm.

It is amazing how much wildlife is in this little space. I was able to find a dragon fly, butterflies, blue birds, and some bull frogs in the pond. Again, my lack of a telephoto lens did not allow me to get a good shot of the bull frog, but trust me, his little head is peeking up through the algae in the pond.

In addition to the cute little gift shop full of wonderful lavender inspired gifts (and also available for purchase online), there is a pavilion for private parties and classes such as the one we attended. Although the lavender was not quite ready for harvesting, this is a cut your own lavender farm. It is only open on the weekends, so be sure to check out the website prior to making your visit.

The class was a water color painting class where we painted a 4 corner bag. I learned that when you turn acrylic paint into water colors, it tends to bleed, so watch that water amount. It is a cute project (although the perfectionist in me was twitching a bit).

Cheri Gray (our instructor from Stroke of Art Emporium) made our bags out of flour sacks (repurposing - love it!) and added the decal ahead of time by adhering the fabric to a piece of card stock and running it through her printer. I appreciate the amount of prep work she went through for this class. She had us make a sample bag, so we could do it at home. The class was scheduled for two hours, and at first, I didn't think it would take that long, but of course, it does take some time to paint.

We also were offered a light snack of lavender cookies and lavender lemonade (yum!).

It sprinkled some while we were there, and the pavilion provided us with the perfect amount of shelter to keep going with our projects (My uncle, who was chilling in a lounge chair near by, did have to seek shelter).  Everyone who attended was friendly and welcoming, which made for a relaxing time.

Judy the owner was very personable, so be sure to say hi when you stop by (Judy is the one on the left).

You can definitely make a day of your visit with a stop at Lake Wilhelm and the Goddard State Park, which is nearby (you'll drive through it if you go the Rt 79 directions). On the same road is the Wilhelm Winery, so plenty to do when you are done with your time at the farm.

I also got to stop by the County Line Diner (rushing to get there by closing time) to get some carpenter bee traps. No time to eat, but I did purchase two traps. Thanks for the tip, Judy!

So much to do definitely puts a return trip to this location on my future GET To Do List!
